Screen printing
A mesh screen is made for each colour, ink is pushed through it onto the fabric, and the bag moves to the next screen for the next colour. It is the workhorse method for jute and for good reason: the ink is laid thickly, so it sits opaquely on a dark or textured fabric where a thinner ink would disappear.
Screen printing is at its best with one to four solid spot colours — logos, wordmarks, simple graphics. It is at its worst with gradients, fine halftones and anything needing tight registration between many colours, because each colour is a separate pass and each pass can shift slightly.

Offset printing
Offset transfers ink from a plate to a blanket and then onto the surface, reproducing full CMYK. It is the only one of the three that gives genuinely photographic results, and on a laminated bag the coated surface lets it achieve near-print-on-paper quality.
The cost is setup. Plates must be made and colour calibrated, which is why the MOQ is the highest of the three. It also generally requires a laminated or otherwise coated surface — offset onto raw open-weave jute is not a sensible combination.

Digital printing
Digital goes straight from artwork to fabric with no screens or plates at all. That single fact drives everything about when to use it: there is essentially no setup cost, so short runs become viable, and every bag in a run can theoretically carry different artwork.
The trade-off is per-piece cost and ink deposit. Digital lays down less ink than screen, so on a coarse dark fabric the result can look washed out relative to what a screen would achieve. On juco, where the weave is closed, digital performs considerably better than it does on plain jute.

The fabric matters as much as the method
A common and expensive mistake is choosing a print method without considering what it is printing onto. Fine detail on plain jute will break up regardless of method, because the weave itself has gaps larger than the detail. If your artwork has small type or thin lines, the fix is usually a finer fabric — juco or a laminated surface — rather than a more expensive print process.
Before you commit to a run
- Supply vector artwork wherever possible. A logo scaled up from a small raster file will print exactly as badly as it looks on screen.
- Give Pantone references rather than screen colours. RGB on a monitor is not a specification a press can match.
- Ask for a digital proof before screens or plates are made, and a physical pre-production sample before the run.
- Check the print area against the bag panel, remembering that seams, gussets and handle attachments eat into the usable face.
Common questions
- Which print method lasts longest on a jute bag?
- Screen printing generally wears best on raw jute, because the thicker ink deposit penetrates and sits into the weave rather than on top of it.
- Can I print photographs on a jute bag?
- On raw jute, not well — the open weave breaks up continuous-tone images. On a laminated surface with offset printing, or on juco with digital, photographic reproduction is achievable.
- How many colours can I print?
- Screen printing commonly runs to six spot colours. Beyond that, full CMYK via offset or digital is usually both cheaper and more accurate than adding further screens.
